Solanus Casey is known for his ministry of the healing the ill and compassion towards the poor. Solanus Casey was born on November 25, 1870, in Wisconsin, USA. His Irish parents named him Bernard and raised him in the Catholic faith.
Father Solanus was ordained in 1904, and worked in New York, Detroit, and Indiana. Blessed Solanus Casey became known as “The Porter of St. Bonaventure’s” as he assisted those who came to the church. It was in this capacity that he earned a reputation for his gentle and wise counsel. He believed in the power of prayer and intercession and conducted many services for the sick. Today, people visit his tomb to pray for his intercession and leave prayer intentions.
Blessed Solanus Casey is also remembered for his love of the poor. He started the Capuchin Soup Kitchen during the Great Depression that still serves meals today. In 1995 he was declared Venerable by Pope John Paul II, he was beatified on November 18th, 2017, in Detroit Michigan. His feast day is November 3rd.
